Rhimes is the first African American to create and executive-produce a top-rated one-hour TV series that has aired more than one season: Grey's Anatomy. She has also produced Private Practice on ABC. Rhimes, who as a child liked to tape-record and transcribe her own stories, surged to prominence after screenwriting the 1999 HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, which earned Halle Berry Emmy and Golden Globe best actress awards.
