  • Bio: Levi Garraway is pushing the envelope in the study of cancer treatment. Garraway shifted his focus from infectious diseases to cancer research once his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999. He is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 2007 Garraway, who earned his bachelor's, M.D. and doctorate degrees from Harvard, received a New Innovator Award in 2007 from the National Institutes of Health, worth $1.5 million over five years; he was one of 29 winners selected from more than 2,200 applicants nationwide. Garraway's genomics research team has made a string of discoveries linking genetic alterations and prostate cancer, moving us closer to individualized, targeted therapies and targeted medicine. He was part of a team that released a Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia in March 2012 that "provides highly useful resources for the generation and testing of hypotheses related to the grand goal of personalized cancer medicine," according to cancer specialist John Weinstein.
