John Legend, a three-time The Root 100 honoree, is a philanthropic machine. A devoted supporter of education rights, he continues to sit on the boards of the Education Equality Project, Teach for America, Stand for Children and the Harlem Village Academies. This year his Show Me Campaign, an organization created to help break cycles of poverty, awarded $3,000 stipends to college students working unpaid internships. For his commitment to education, Legend was granted an honorary doctorate in humanities from Howard University in May 2012. A longtime supporter of President Barack Obama, Legend is stumping for the president in his native Ohio, a battleground state. Not leaving music behind, Legend was a judge on the ABC music show Duets and scored a hit record with "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)," the lead single off the soundtrack for the blockbuster film Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.
