  • Bio: As public debate gained traction this year about black women's weight and obesity, Ashley Hicks was one of many healthy-living advocates who continued to promote the benefits of exercise. The Black Girls Run! joggers network she co-founded three years ago with Toni Carey has grown to 44,000 members and more than 60 chapters nationwide. A former soccer player who started running when she started to gain weight after college, Hicks never imagined that her group would become a movement. Now she's on a mission to encourage others. "It's important that our kids see and are exposed to health and fitness and know that this is a lifelong adventure," she told the Chicago Tribune. "They need to see women who want to stay in shape for the rest of their lives. What's so amazing is that it has spread by word of mouth."
