  • Bio: One of only two Muslims in Congress (along with Rep. Keith Ellison), André Carson was criticized in July for saying U.S. schools could learn something about innovation from madrassas, the Islamic religious schools. The three-term representative is accustomed to foes making his religion an issue, especially when election time draws near. But a controversy he endured last year was self-induced, when he declared that some Tea Party members would "love to see you and me ... hanging on a tree." To his credit, he refused to apologize and stood by the remarks. Growing up in a rough section of Indianapolis led to Carson's first career, in law enforcement. His heart for public service was passed down from his grandmother, the late Rep. Julia Carson, who in 1996 became was the first African American and the first woman to represent Indianapolis.
