A 37-year-old Louisiana schoolteacher has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old male student and knowingly exposing him to the AIDS virus, WWLTV reports.
According to news station, sheriff’s deputies arrested Derrick Nesby last week at H.L. Bourgeois High School, the Terrebonne Parish school where he teaches and is also the track coach.
“We can establish the fact that there was an encounter that happened,” Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Chief of Detectives Malcolm Wolfe told the news station.
Investigators told WWLTV that a school official had received information about an incident involving Nesby and a 16-year-old but would not comment on when or where the reported incident happened. Detectives also told the news station that they believe the alleged incident involving Nesby, who has worked at the school for only a year, happened sometime last year.
“We continued our investigation where we established more evidence that something did happen, and at that point we got a warrant for his arrest,” Wolfe told WWLTV.
During the investigation, officials learned that Nesby has AIDS, the news station reports. They believe Nesby was fully aware that he had AIDS and knowingly exposed the teen to HIV, according to WWLTV. Nesby has been charged with “felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile” and “intentional exposure of the AIDS virus.”
“Both of these charges are felonies. Both of these charges carry with them the maximum prison sentence of 10 years in prison,” legal analyst Chick Foret told the news station. “They’re both very serious felonies.”
Nesby’s bond was originally set at $500,000, but that amount doubled once he was charged with intentional exposure of the AIDS virus. WWL reports that Nesby, who remains in jail, has denied all allegations made against him.
