1st Look: Trailer for James Brown Biopic Released

The funk-filled film about the Godfather of Soul opens this summer.

Chadwick Boseman as James Brown

We’ve finally been graced with a first glimpse of the upcoming James Brown biopic Get on Up, and we were struck by the scenes depicting the riveting ups and downs—triumph and tears alike—of the soul great’s life. The movie, directed by Tate Taylor (who also had a hand in The Help), features 42’s Chadwick Boseman in the iconic lead role, along with favorites Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer (both, of course, also in The Help).

We’re excited to see how these acting heavyweights handle the story of the Godfather of Soul—and so far it looks like we’re in for a hell of a movie this summer. (It’s due to open Aug. 1.)

The next question, of course, is, are you ready for the funk?
