The father of R&B singer Mary J. Blige is in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck after what police have called a domestic dispute with a former girlfriend.
Police said that they were called to Thomas Blige’s Battle Creek, Michigan apartment around 6:58 a.m. Thursday. They found Blige in his apartment with three stab wounds, including one to his neck, USA Today reports.
Blige, 63, was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. The hospital told USA Today that there were no updates on his condition. Police arrested his former girlfriend on a charge of assault with intent to murder.
Detective Sgt. Jim Martens told USA Today that police believe Blige saw the woman deflating the tires on his Ford SUV in the parking lot outside his apartment and went out to confront her. An argument ensued and Blige was stabbed.
Officers who arrived at Arbors of Battle Creek apartment complex and found blood in the snow near the entrance to Blige’s apartment. Police also found a knife in the apartment that they believe was used in the attack.
Officers then went to the former girlfriend’s nearby apartment in the same complex and found her in blood-spattered clothing. She was taken into custody and treated at a nearby hospital for a cut. The woman was taken to the Calhoun County jail and was expected to be arraigned Friday in Calhoun County District Court, USA Today reports.
This isn’t the first time that police have been called to Blige’s apartment for a violent domestic dispute. According to USA Today, the police have handled seven domestic violence complaints between Blige and his former girlfriend. In October, police also charged the 50-year-old former girlfriend with aggravated domestic violence after she hit Blige in the head with a glass candlestick. On Jan. 10 she entered a no-contest plea to the charge and was placed on six months probation. She was ordered to have “non-assaultive” contact with Blige, USA Today reports.
