The situation is looking increasingly grim for Jahi McMath’s family, with her family’s attorney now reporting that her body has deteriorated so much, “we don’t know if she’s going to make it,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Jahi underwent what was supposed to be a routine tonsillectomy in early December at Children’s Hospital Oakland in Calif. Things took a terrible turn when she went into cardiac arrest postsurgery, suffered extensive hemorrhaging and was declared brain dead.

According to the Times, at least three neurologists have confirmed that the 13-year-old was unable to breathe by herself, had no blood flowing to her brain and showed no signs of electrical activity. The Alameda County coroner issued a death certificate on Friday, listing Dec. 12 as the date of death, and courts have agreed that she is legally dead.

But her family members have persisted, winning a court order to keep her on a ventilator, and were eventually able to secure permission to transfer her from the Oakland hospital to an undisclosed facility that has agreed to treat her. The family is hoping for a miracle.

"She's in very bad shape," Attorney Christopher Dolan said, according to the Times. "What I can tell you is that those examinations show that her medical condition, separate from the brain issue, is not good."
