The controversy surrounding the interpreter who used bogus sign language at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service is not quite yet over. Thamsanqa Jantjie was allegedly part of a group of people who burned two men to death after they were caught with a stolen television, the Associated Press reports.

According to a relative of Jantjie’s and three of his friends, tires were placed around the offenders’ necks before being set on fire in the 2003 killings. Two other suspects went on trial for their part in the deaths, but Jantjie was given a pass because he was determined to be mentally unfit to stand trial.

The men, one of whom is Jantjie’s cousin, asked for anonymity because of the publicity surrounding the event at Mandela’s memorial, which embarrassed the South African government.
