McDonald’s has shuttered a controversial employee-resources website that contained posts that, well, advised workers to avoid consuming the very food they serve, CNN reports.
A graphic on the site showed a meal with a cheeseburger, fries and drink that was captioned “Unhealthy choice,” the report shows. Next to it was an image of a sub, a salad and water that was captioned “Healthier choice.”
On Wednesday, visitors to McResource Line were told: “We are temporarily performing some maintenance in order to provide you with the best experience possible. Please excuse us while these upgrades are being made.”
In a statement at the site, McDonald’s said: “A combination of factors has led us to re-evaluate and we’ve directed the vendor to take down the website. Between links to irrelevant or outdated information, along with outside groups taking elements out of context, this created unwarranted scrutiny and inappropriate commentary. None of this helps our McDonald’s team members.”
It was the latest in a string of embarrassments for the corporation because of the McResource Line website. In July, the company was roundly criticized after offering budget-planning advice for workers.
“For starters, it didn’t account for food and gasoline,” CNNMoney reported. “The second line on the sample budget leaves room for income from a second job, which many called an admission by the fast food giant that its workers can’t live on its wages alone.”
NBC News reported earlier this month that the site offered advice on how much to tip a pool cleaner, housekeeper and even an au pair.
The gaffes come as McDonald’s and other fast-food companies are engaged in a fierce battle to improve wages for workers.
