On Saturday morning, Uhuru Kenyatta was declared president of Kenya, following an election against challenger Prime Minister Raila Odinga, reports the Wall Street Journal.

"The constitutionally sanctioned process of electing a new set of leader to take us to the next level has been thwarted by another tainted election," Mr. Odinga said, adding that his team would outline instances of vote manipulation and miscounting in court.Meanwhile, he said, "we want to appeal to all Kenyans to respect the rule of law and the constitution of which they are so proud." …

Victory for Mr. Kenyatta, 51, put him in the footsteps of his father, Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of independent Kenya, extending the sway of a family and tribe that has dominated government and business since British colonial times. Among Kenya's richest families, the Kenyattas own huge tracts of rich agricultural land and stakes in major Kenyan banks and media companies.

One worry here is that Western governments may pull back from a country run by Mr. Kenyatta because he is set to go on trial at the International Criminal Court for stoking violence after the 2007 elections.
