Well, when it comes to celebrity name changes, this is no “Diddy Dirty Money,” “Meta World Peace” or “the Artist Formerly Known As.” But apparently a change from “Jackson” to “Jacksun” — which, as a spokesperson pointed out, changes nothing, phonetically speaking — is something Michael Jackson’s brother Jermaine feels he needs to do for his own artistic career.
He’s already filed a petition and awaits a hearing on the change. From USA Today:
“The filing doesn’t elaborate, but Jackson’s friend Steve Dennis, who was speaking on the singer’s behalf, said it’s not unheard of for artists to change their names.
“Phonetically, it changes nothing,” he said. “It is something he has chosen to do, and it’s fair to say that you cannot blame this one on the boogie, you’ve got to blame it on the sunshine,” Dennis told AP, a reference to the Jackson 5 disco hit, Blame it on the Boogie.
A hearing on whether Jackson will become Jacksun is scheduled for Feb. 22.
Any ideas about whether eschewing his given name disqualifies Jermaine from participating in the ongoing family feuds related to Michael Jackson’s estate and children? Somehow we doubt it.
