As violence and riots sweep through sections of London and spread to other cities, Sky News' Mark Stone asks looters in Clapham Junction, "Are you proud of this?"

"We're getting our taxes back," a woman yells back.

Violence first broke out on Saturday in the low-income, multiethnic northern district of Tottenham, with protesters demonstrating against the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan, a black 29-year-old father of four who was killed in disputed circumstances Thursday.

Duggan's death stirred up racial tensions similar to those that prompted U.K. race riots in the 1980s, NPR reports.

But as the latest unrest spreads, some blame rising social tensions in Britain as the government slashes 80 billion pounds ($130 billion) from public spending by 2015 to reduce the country's huge deficit.
