The Root Recommends: 'The Kid'

Sapphire's newest book is a compelling sequel to her best-selling novel Push.

The Penguin Press

Sapphire's long-awaited sequel to Push, The Kid, details the dynamic journey of Precious' son, Abdul Jones. The character that inspired the Academy Award-winning movie Precious is absent from The Kid, which begins with Precious' sudden death and funeral. Abdul's trek takes him from a Catholic orphanage to a downtown loft -- and many places in between -- as he fumbles through tumult and tribulation on his journey to adulthood.

Garnering praise from the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and more, The Kid is bound to be atop many people's summer reading lists. The Kid is in stores July 5.

Previous recommendation: 'Indigo.'
