The Root Recommends: 'Ice'

Expect the unexpected in Ice-T's new memoir.

In his new memoir, Ice: A Memoir of Gangsta Life and Redemption, rapper-turned-actor Ice-T gives readers a peek into his fascinating life and career.

To quote the New York Times: "No one, after all, better embodies the darling 'hip-hop as Horatio Alger myth' narrative than someone who's gone, to cite his subtitle, from South Central to Hollywood -- from robbing people to rhyming for them, from singing about killing cops to playing a cop on camera, from being blasted by the president to winning an N.A.A.C.P. Image Award."

Although Ice-T's off-screen persona isn't for everyone, this honest and sometimes surprising memoir might just be worth the read.

Previous recommendation: 'The Voice.'
