The DNC is coming to Charlotte in 2012.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Democrats have chosen Charlotte, N.C., as the host city for the 46th Democratic National Convention in 2012, according to a Democratic official. The Queen City beat out St. Louis, Cleveland and Minneapolis to win the bid. First lady Michelle Obama confirmed the news via e-mail sent to supporters:

Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an "up by the bootstraps" mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South. Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue.

The bid process started more than a year ago, when the DNC contacted city leaders about potentially holding the convention in Charlotte. As many as 35,000 delegates will converge on Charlotte in September 2012. The event is expected to boost Charlotte's economy, bringing new jobs, new businesses and visitor spending to the city.

The New South is ready for prime time. Will delegates be ready for the New South?
