MSNBC is reporting that by 2014, blacks will no longer be the majority in Washington, D.C. The city dubbed the “Chocolate City” because of its teeming black population will not even be the milk chocolate city, according to Benjamin Orr, a research analyst at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program. Orr told the Washington Post, “I forecast that by 2014, African Americans would no longer be the majority in the District.”
The reason for this shift has been the influx of affluent whites, the creation of new high-skilled, high-paying jobs and the decimation of lower-skilled, lower-paying jobs. Brookings found that from 2000 to 2009, the District gained 39,000 households with incomes of $75,000 or higher. During that same period, the city lost 37,600 households with incomes of $50,000 or less.
Stevie Wonder could see this coming based on how many cities are shifting in their demographic makeup because of these same reasons. Move in affluent whites; create high-skilled, high-paying jobs that will keep them here; and push out working-class or lower-income blacks to “suburban” areas by gentrifying “transitioning” neighborhoods and exporting said jobs overseas. It’s not rocket science — it is capitalism 101. We guess the Georgetown area of town wasn’t enough for the affluent. What next? Let’s take a wild guess: a white mayor.
