President Barack Obama

Politics Daily is reporting that President Barack Obama's State of the Union address will be given before a joint session of Congress on Jan. 25, 2010. New House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) extended the formal invitation to Obama on Tuesday. In his letter to the president, Boehner made a mention -- though not by name -- of the Saturday Tucson, Arizona, shooting spree that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) wounded and 19 others, including a federal judge, dead or injured. Boehner also wrote in the letter,  "A new Congress provides us a renewed opportunity to find common ground and address the priorities of the American people. Our actions must be driven by their desire for freedom, economic recovery, and fiscal sensibility, as well as a need to rebuild the broken bonds of trust between the people and their government."

Let's hope that Boehner's actions match his words and that all politicians remember that they are elected to represent the interests of the people, not just political parties and interest groups.
