Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, the man accused of trying to blow up a plane last Christmas, wants to represent himself. AbdulMutallab says that he no longer wants to be represented by federal defenders. AbdulMutallab, the British-educated son of a Nigerian bank executive, is accused of trying to set off a bomb hidden in his underwear aboard a plane from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to Detroit on December 25. Judge Nancy Edmunds granted his request after asking him a series of legal questions. She did appoint standby counsel for AbdulMuttallab. Representing oneself in court is never a good idea. It's a safe bet that AbdulMutallab didn't watch the John Allen Muhummad or Colin Ferguson trials.
