Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced today that he will not seek re-election during the next mayoral election. The six-term mayor said that it is time to “move on” as he made his announcement with his wife standing by his side. Daley’s announcement sets off a power scramble that has been stymied by his 21 years in office. Daley’s wife has been battling metastatic breast cancer since 2002, and he has been under fire for a $655 million budget shortfall. “Simply put, it’s time,” said Daley, 68. “Time for me, it’s time for Chicago to move on.” The field is wide open.
