Protesters and police scuffled at a N.C. school-board meeting in Raleigh, resulting in multiple arrests. One of the people arrested was the Rev. William Barber, the head of the state NAACP chapter, who had been banned from the meeting after a trespassing arrest at a June 20 school board meeting. The Wake County School Board has voted multiple times over the last several months to scrap the district's diversity policy, which distributed students based on socioeconomics and for years had been a model for other districts looking to balance diversity in schools. Several school-board members elected last year have built a majority in favor of focusing on neighborhood schools. Protesters are afraid that the measure will create high-poverty and low-performing schools. Getting rid of diversity programs in 2010? We thought the triangle was supposed to be the intellectual hub of North Carolina. Guess not.
