Fox News Advancing Age-Old 'Scare White People' Political Strategy

Rachel Maddow looks at Fox News' politics of fear through a historical lens.

While President Obama bobbed and weaved on the racial implications of the Shirley Sherrod debacle, Rachel Maddow hit Fox News and other news outlets that have used a "scare white people" political strategy with an uppercut. In a self-reflective move, she traced how politicians and the media have used the politics of fear to generate support. It took Shirley Sherrod, who raised the issue of Fox News and Andrew Breitbart's role in the USDA debacle in a CNN interview, and Maddow to actually say what so many people were thinking: Why is fear such a successful motivator in our society?
