Cape St. Claire, Md., has some explaining to do. It seems that in 2010, the town still has language in the books barring blacks and Asians from owning property. Cape St. Claire Improvement Association board members are working to remove racially discriminatory language from covenants that date back to the 1940s. The language reads:
“At no time shall any lot or any part thereof be sold, leased, transferred to or permitted to be occupied by any Negro, Chinaman, Japanese, or person of Negro, Chinese, or Japanese descent. This restriction is not intended to include servants or employees of the owner or occupant of said lot.”
Wow. We’re wondering why this law is still on the books and why so many folks in Maryland swear out that Maryland is not the south. To them, welcome.
