Harold Ford Jr Won't Run For Senate in NY

The former Tennessee lawmaker says he doesn't want to divide Democrats

Who saw this one coming? Former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford, Jr. announced in a New York Times op-ed that he won't  has run for U.S. Senate in New York against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand:

I’ve examined this race in every possible way, and I keep returning to the same fundamental conclusion: If I run, the likely result would be a brutal and highly negative Democratic primary — a primary where the winner emerges weakened and the Republican strengthened.

I refuse to do anything that would help Republicans win a Senate seat in New York, and give the Senate majority to the Republicans.

Ford faced Ford faced opposition from the liberal Democrats in New York over positions he took as a congressman favoring gun rights, opposing gay marriage and getting tough on illegal immigration. He lost a race for Senate in his home state of Tennessee in 2006.
