Who saw this one coming? Former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford, Jr. announced in a New York Times op-ed that he won't  has run for U.S. Senate in New York against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand:

I’ve examined this race in every possible way, and I keep returning to the same fundamental conclusion: If I run, the likely result would be a brutal and highly negative Democratic primary — a primary where the winner emerges weakened and the Republican strengthened.

I refuse to do anything that would help Republicans win a Senate seat in New York, and give the Senate majority to the Republicans.

Ford faced Ford faced opposition from the liberal Democrats in New York over positions he took as a congressman favoring gun rights, opposing gay marriage and getting tough on illegal immigration. He lost a race for Senate in his home state of Tennessee in 2006.
