Mamas, let’s be honest for a minute: Although the card companies would have us thinking otherwise, just having a child of one’s own is a present in itself, right?

Well, it is to me. The sound of my kids’ laughter is more melodious than anything I could download onto my iPod. And as much as I love pretty shiny things, their smiles sparkle far brighter than anything I could receive in a tiny blue box. So this Mother’s Day, a homemade card and breakfast in bed will be more than enough reward for me. I don’t want a gift for what I feel the universe has already blessed me with.

What I want is a gift for the days I haven’t been able to use the bathroom without a pint-sized army surrounding the door, about to kick it in. A little somethin’ somethin’ for the days when I wished I could have escaped through the commode, but chose not to. A present for the days I swore I felt a year (or two) being peeled off of my life as I endured their whining—while stuck on the freeway during rush-hour traffic. That’s all I want. Just a small token of appreciation for the days they didn’t warn us about. Can I get a witness?

Thanks to The Root’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide, I can. We've equipped you with a gift idea to suit every special mama on your list, even if that happens to be you. From the new mom to the more seasoned, these presents are bound to make for a pleasant Mother’s Day 2009. Because if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. And we wouldn’t want that now, would we?
