Metro train doors open while in motion

4 hours 33 min ago

Yesterday, after further reflection on Jay-Z's support for gay marriage, I sat down to write about it. I'd love to know what you all think as well.

When you ride the Metro to school for years, there are certain things about the system you learn. The first one is: The bathrooms are ALWAYS available for use, no matter what the station manager tells you. The second is: Never, ever, ever, ever lean on the doors, because those badboys just might open. I saw it plenty of times as a kid. And it happened again yesterday on the Red Line, The Post's Dana Hedgpeth reports. No injuries were reported, but I do wonder if the chimes rang first

D.C. Caribbean Carnival heads to Baltimore

5 hours 19 min ago

When D.C. Caribbean Carnival Inc. announced last week that it was moving its annual parade to Baltimore, it seemed sketchy — like a blindside hit to many of the festival’s ardent supporters. But what hopefully is a temporary relocation could end up being the most productive outcome for the event going forward.

Tasha Mack is good at many things: Managing professional athletes, taking care of her son and being a support system for her friends are just a few. But when it comes to being celibate, she’s a mess. After two weeks, even meatballs can send her into a frenzy.

Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich won’t soon be forgotten

May 15, 2012 - 5:02pm

In 2007, Dennis Kucinich, a Democrat, and Ron Paul, a Republican, were kindred spirits: Demure in size, but mighty in spirit, the congressmen were steadfast in their outsized battle to change American foreign policy as they sought the presidency.

A Howard University graduate looks ahead

May 15, 2012 - 4:48pm

I don’t understand why people say graduating college is the best time of your life. If that’s the case, then the Lord should just take me now.

I’ve never been more stressed in my life. I’m frantically searching for a full-time job while avoiding badgering (but well-intentioned) questions about my future. For the first time, I have absolutely no idea where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing in a month. My business friends were offered their $60,000-salary jobs last fall while we journalism students desperately shoot out résumé tapes and writing samples in response to every Internet ad and nervously drum our fingers waiting to hear whether our internships will land us an entry-level position with benefits.

Jay-Z supports President Obama on gay marriage

May 15, 2012 - 1:48pm

Jay-Z’s endorsement of gay marriage did a lot more for me than anything President Obama could have said.

A prominent rap star speaking out in solidarity with global acceptance is as big a cultural step forward as the leader of the free world making the same claim.

Ward 5 holds special election

May 15, 2012 - 12:19pm

Yesterday, I read one of the most inspirational stories about journalism I've ever seen. After a small-town paper totally ripped off Duane Lester's blog post, he confronted them about it. The resulting video is absolutely amazing and a must-watch for journos.

Mother’s Day gift ideas

May 11, 2012 - 4:25pm

News Flash! News Flash! EVERY woman who has given birth wants a gift, honor or even a high-five on Mother’s Day. I know some mothers, particularly during this mediocre economy, may SAY that buying her a gift is optional on May 13, but please don’t fall for it. It’s like saying wives hate Valentine’s Day gifts. Some may, but the overwhelming majority don’t. Mother’s Day is the one day that the woman who nursed you, raised you, nagged you and loved you can get her due. Even if you don’t have a mother, some important female figure in your life is secretly hoping for a little shout out on Mother’s Day. At bottom, buy a nice card with a heartfelt note.

Time magazine’s unusual breasfeeding cover

May 11, 2012 - 12:42pm

Sorry all about the random day off yesterday. Had a bit of a family health scare, but all's well at the homestead and we're back in the saddle.

The financing situation for the Silver Line is beyond complicated. The counties involved and the state of Virginia as a whole are at loggerheads over who's going to pay for what and how labor will be distributed. Now, Gov. Robert McDonnell is trying to force the hand of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which controls the Dulles rail construction, to seat his appointments to the board. Some say he’ll withhold $150 million in funding if he doesn't get his way. Others call that idiotic.

‘Basketball Wives’: Season 4, episode 12

May 11, 2012 - 10:03am

On this episode of “Basketball Wives,” the women travel to Tahiti. I’m sorry, Tahiti. You don’t deserve this.

Back in Miami, Royce’s tantrum in front of her dad continues. “Sometimes I just want a hug,” she says in between sobs. “You just don’t get it.” Her dad finally relents and hugs her. “Okay,” he says. I think he just wanted her to shut up.

President Obama’s gay marriage endorsement needs legal action

A historic, personal “evolution” occurred Wednesday when President Obama became the first sitting president to endorse marriage equality. Civil rights, civil liberties and human rights converged when Obama gave his thoughtful and ringing endorsement of same-sex marriage.

President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage emphasizes equality for all

May 10, 2012 - 9:44am

I stand for equal rights for all and now find myself standing at the intersection of religion and politics. President Obama’s decision to affirm same-sex marriage has forced me to talk publicly about my private faith and cast my vote in the open and not behind a veil. Some say that Obama’s public pronouncement ignited a firestorm, but I believe he really was inviting debate and discussion to bring about “evolutionary thought” such as he has undergone.

Applauding President Obama for his announcement on same-sex marriage

May 10, 2012 - 9:44am

Since President Obama took office, he has accomplished a great deal. In my view, the president’s leadership has led to a safer country and a stronger economy.

But Wednesday, when President Obama announced that he supported the right of same-sex couples to marry and be treated as equal citizens under the law, he reminded me why I voted for him.

NBC to air ‘1600 Penn’

May 9, 2012 - 1:27pm

Some readers wrote me yesterday, saying that my classification of a headline about dolphins that died from a drug overdose after a rave as the “best ever” was inappropriate. And they're right. I apologize. It was a crass comment, but I will say that sometimes great headlines do not come from happy stories.
